Although we usually tend to associate dandruff with dry scalp, dandruff outbreaks also occur on oily scalp, which is commonly known as wet dandruff. Compared with dry dandruff, treating wet dandruff requires more effort. The Malassezia yeast that are responsible for dandruff breakouts thrive on the greasy scalp. They feed on sebum and rapidly multiply. Moreover, the sebum combines with the dead skin on the scalp to form a sticky layer that forms the perfect breeding ground for the yeasts and worsens the dandruff breakout. Therefore, treatment for wet dandruff is different from the dry dandruff treatment.
Here Are Some Effective Remedies For Wet Dandruff
Vinegar
Vinegar dissolves the grease and reduces the oiliness of the scalp. The antimicrobial property of vinegar helps in suppressing growth of the dandruff causing yeasts on the scalp. To treat wet dandruff, dilute 4 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with equal amount of water. With a cotton ball apply the diluted vinegar on the scalp. Leave the vinegar on your scalp for at least 30 minutes. Then rinse your hair and wash with mild shampoo.
Lemon Juice
Lemon juice is a natural astringent. Applying lemon juice to the scalp helps in reducing excess oil secretion. It balances the pH of the scalp, which helps in reducing yeast overgrowth on the scalp. If applying lemon juice directly to the scalp causes irritation, dilute it with a small amount of water. To get rid of wet dandruff, apply lemon juice daily for up to 10 days.
Hibiscus and Fenugreek Seeds Paste
Both hibiscus and fenugreek seeds contain anti-dandruff properties. Hibiscus also helps in reducing the greasiness of the scalp and promotes hair growth. Put 15 to 20 hibiscus leaves and flowers and a tablespoon of fenugreek seeds in a blender. Soak the fenugreek seeds overnight in warm water to make them soft. Pour a small amount of water in the blender. Blend to make a smooth paste. Apply the hibiscus and fenugreek seeds paste on your scalp. Leave it on for 30 minutes. Wash off with your regular shampoo.
Baking Soda
Baking soda reduces the stickiness of the scalp and helps in reducing yeast growth. On wet scalp, massage baking soda for a few minutes. Leave the baking soda on the scalp for 2 to 5 minutes and then thoroughly rinse your hair with water.
Henna, Indian Gooseberry, Lemon And Curd
A hair pack containing dried henna leaves, Indian gooseberry powder, lemon juice and curd helps in providing fast relief from wet dandruff. The hair pack cleans the scalp and reduces the excessive scalp oiliness, thereby helping in preventing yeast overgrowth. Apply the hair pack once a week to keep wet dandruff at bay.
