After weeks of negotiations, the United Auto Workers (UAW) union has reached a tentative agreement with General Motors (GM) on a new labor contract. The proposed deal will cover the next four years and is subject to ratification by UAW members.
The voting process began on October 16th and ended on October 25th. The UAW released the results of the voting on October 30th. According to the union, the tentative agreement has been approved by a majority of the GM-UAW membership, with 57% of production workers and 63% of skilled trades workers voting in favor of the proposed contract.
The new agreement includes a number of changes that will impact UAW members, including wage increases, bonuses, and improved healthcare benefits. The agreement also addresses issues related to temporary workers, job security, and plant closings.
One of the most significant changes in the agreement is the creation of a new path to permanent employment for temporary workers. Currently, temporary workers are not guaranteed full-time employment and often work for years without benefits or job security. Under the new agreement, temporary workers who meet certain criteria will have the opportunity to become permanent employees.
The agreement also includes provisions related to job security. GM has agreed to invest $9 billion in its U.S. operations, which will include the creation of new jobs and the retention of existing ones. The company has also agreed to invest in several specific facilities, including the Detroit-Hamtramck plant, which had been slated for closure.
UAW President Gary Jones praised the agreement, saying it “represents major gains for UAW-GM members.” However, some UAW members have expressed concerns about the agreement, particularly related to the issue of healthcare. The agreement includes some changes to healthcare benefits that could cost some members more money.
Despite these concerns, the results of the voting indicate that a majority of UAW members are in favor of the agreement. Once the vote is officially certified, the new labor contract will take effect and UAW members will begin to see the benefits of the changes included in the agreement.
