Skin is covered with a natural layer of lipid which is responsible for keeping it soft and moisturized. Any activity that leads to depletion of this lipid layer leads to dry skin. Dryness is majorly caused as a result of moisture loss from body resulting in dry, dead skin that peals off and in worst cases causes pain. The condition is mostly witnessed in winters when extreme conditions deplete the natural layer (lipid) over skin.
Low humidity conditions add to reduction of moisture from body causing dryness. Out of the entire body, it is facial skin that has major threat from dry environment as face skin is very soft, delicate and the only uncovered part in winters. Hence, it is under direct attack of cold, harsh winds and should be looked after.
In such cases where skin feels too dry to deal with, it becomes important to pack it with moisture. More important is to add moisture into the skin than moisturizing it superficially. Let’s try out certain home remedies to get rid of dry face skin.
Effective Home Remedies for Dry Face
It’s probably the easiest thing one can do to stay fit. No medicine, no mess, just have water! As soon as skin starts feeling dry, it is an indication of loss of moisture and dryness within skin. The easiest way to hydrate skin is to increase water intake. Water hydrates body from inside leading to better and lasting effects.
Though, drinking water would not produce immediate results but water would work from roots of the problem. Hence, drinking atleast 8 glasses of water is must to attain healthy skin. Most importantly, try not to replace water with any other liquid such as tea, coffee or anything else.
Avoid Hot Water
Using hot water to wash face should be avoided. Hot water removes the natural lipid layer over face, making it dry. Instead of using extreme temperature water, it should be preferred to go for lukewarm water. In addition to hot water, harsh soaps should not be used for washing face. They have actions similar to hot water, depleting protective layer over skin and making situation worst for dry skins.
Honey has various health benefits and is consumed by many for healthier and fit body. Along with health benefits, it also has beauty benefits and can be applied over skin. Those who have dry skin can try moisturizing their face with honey as it contains amino acids which lock moisture. Take little honey and apply all over face. Keep it undisturbed for about 10 minutes and wash it thoroughly with water. In case applying honey directly to face is cumbersome, it can be mixed with little milk to make a thick paste. The paste can then be applied on face, left for 10 minutes and rinsed.
Egg yolk is a pool of water and fats. It can thus be used as a moisturizer to add life to dead skin. Separate yolk from an egg and mix it with one teaspoon olive oil. Make sure both the ingredients are mixed well. Apply the mixture over clean face and let it dry for about 15 minutes. As soon as the face mask dries, rinse it off. For better results, follow the procedure daily.
Sesame oil can be used over skin to cure dry skin. The oil holds moisture and helps skin retain moisture. It can be directly applied over face. Take small amount of sesame oil and rub it between palms to warm it a little. Gently apply it all over face (and all affected areas) and let it stay for 2-3 minutes. Wash face with water splashes to remove any excess oil and pat face with dry towel to wipe off water. The skin would immediately feel nourished and hydrated.
Avocado is a great moisturizing agent and can be used to cure dry skin. Mash the avocado and mix it with honey (around 2 teaspoons). Adding honey makes the mixture even more moisturizing and easy to use. In case honey is not available, avocado mash can be mixed with a teaspoon of olive oil. Apply the mixture over face and let the moisture seep into skin for about fifteen minutes. It can then be rinsed off. In place of avocado, it’s oil can be directly used. Apply a little avocado oil over face (preferably at night) and let it work the whole night. Face can then be washed normally in the morning followed by a moisturizer.
Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol
Caffeinated drinks (such as coffee) and alcohol prevent water absorption by body. They are diuretics and cause more urination than normal reducing water levels inside body. Those who have dry skin already lack moisture and reduced water levels can worsen the condition. Hence, they should avoid alcohol and caffeine intake. If it is hard to avoid any of these then it is advised to drink lot of water in order to maintain water level.
Do Not Rub Skin
After washing face, wiping it by rubbing with a towel is not a good idea. One should be gentle to skin especially dry skin. In order to wipe off water, gently dab it with towel until it is nearly dry. Leave it a little wet and apply moisturizer. Moisturizer locks the water within skin keeping it hydrated.
Milk is a natural moisturizer and can be applied over dry skin. Wash face with warm water (not hot, warm!) and apply milk. Allow it to work over face till it dries. As soon as it feels dry, wash face with lukewarm water. Milk would show immediate results in terms of nourishment and hydration.
Almonds can be used to hydrate skin as they trap moisture in skin cells. Crush 2-3 almonds and mix them with a little milk just to make a paste like substance that is easy to apply. Use the paste on dry skin and allow it to work for about 10 minutes. Finally, rinse it off with warm water. In case face feels stretched or drying while the mask is applied, wash it off. Almonds would definitely add life to dry faces.
Any of the above methods can be used to get rid of dry skin. But the results would be remarkable only if the procedure is followed continuously. In addition to all these, maintaining a balanced diet is also important to stay healthy. Food rich in vitamin A, C and E should be included in diet for healthy skin. Have a habit of munching nuts atleast once a day as they hydrate skin deeply.
