Jock itch, also known as tinea cruris, is named so because it is mostly seen in sportsmen. It is also known as crotch itch, eczema marginatum and ringworm of the groin. Jock itch is a fungal infection that causes an itchy, red rash in the area around the groin. It is mostly seen in men who perspire a great deal, although it can occur in women too.
The itching can be very intense and irritating. In addition, small blisters might develop and the skin becomes flaky. The infection might spread to the penis, scrotum, anus, inner thigh and in the crack of the buttocks. Trichophyton rubrum is the fungus that mostly causes jock itch. Some other types of fungi can also cause this infection. People with low immunity are more likely to develop this infection.
